Yesterday I got a new male German giant Bearded Dragon as an early birthday present. He came to me in a 30 gallon tank (awful I know) with calcium sand as the substrate. I set up a extra 75 gallon I had and laid newspaper in it (I want to switch to tile or reptile carpet.) I dumped out the sand in the other enclosure and it made me choke. I always buy alot of UVBs and store them until I need them. I set him up a reptisun 10.0 with a basking area of 99 above a nice large basking mopani (I think how you spell it) wood platform. I'm feeding him collard greens, mustard greens, and sweet potato and he ate about 5 dubia roaches and 30 crickets yesterday that was shaken up in calcium d3 . (I breed my own roaches and crickets.) He had a hard dry clay like substance stuck to his feet, I suppose it came from the sand. He is in shed so I took him a bath and massaged his toes softly for about 20 mins until the clay came off. He seemed very dehydrated because he sat there drinking for about 10 mins in the bath. The family member who got him for me said the owner said she just didn't have time for him, they bought him for $40. That doesn't seem to be the only problem. He don't like me ! My other Bearded Dragons love to be held and of course they do need to get use to you but he has tore my arm up. Lol. I have scratches everywhere. I want to cut his toe nails but they're just long and under the whole nail is white and I don't cut the white part. I cut the tiny black tips off my Bearded Dragons nails. He had no problem sleeping last night. I put him in his new hammock and tucked a blanket over him as I do this with all my other dragons. I want to let him get use to his new surroundings first before I let him beat me up with his claws again so I just want to know what are some ways to earn his trust and get him use to me ? So far I've been talking to him and putting my hand in his enclosure and massaging inder his beard (which he don't mind.) He just gets a little jumpy and crazy when I touch the rest of him. I always make sure I let him see my hand and talk to him before I attempt to touch him. He does lick my hand quite a bit. How long does it usually take before he gets use to me ?
